Planting roses / rosehips / rose seeds.?

I live among dunes covered in gorgeous smelling wild roses (pink / white). Wanted to grow some of these wild roses in my mum's garden. What do I do? Cut a bit of a plant, and put it in a glass of water hoping that it will grow roots? Plant a rosehip? (And, if so, when? How do I know when they are ready to be planted?) Cut the rosehip open in order to find seeds to plant? (And, again, how would I know the seeds are ready to be planted?)

Luckily, wild roses are really easy to grow, I just cut open some rosehips off my neighbours and sowed them as soon as they were dry. They spring up under hers all the time.

Keep them well watered in dry weather. I think they may need stratifying. To do that you either let them go through a cold spell in winter and they germinate the following spring; or you can out them in the vegetable rack in the fridge for two weeks.



You can also do layered cuttings. Just scrape some bark off the bottom side of a stem, use hormone rooting powder, cover the stem with soil and press it into the ground with half a brick. Keep it well watered through the dry weather, and by next April/May you'll have a new plant with none of the hassle of cuttings.
Reply:I have my best luck propagating roses from cuttings with my January prunings. Cut a nice pencil thick straight cane about 8-12". Remove all leaves. Dip the ends in a rooting hormone like Rootone. Slip the ends into a pot of potting soil. Keep the pot well watered in a semi-shaded area. In about 2-3 months you will have roots maybe. Some root well and others don't.



I have never tried roses from seed. But a friend did. The hips must be red(or orange depending on how the variety colors). Cut open the hip and break out the seeds. Plant in a pot, water and wait.
