Please tell me what you think of my essay based on a lyrical interpretation?

Having emerged on the pop music scene as the front man for The Police, Sting's greatest fame has come from being a solo artist globally renowned. His music has spanned a wide variety of genres and has provided him a platform for environmental and humanitarian activism. As much as he dedicates his time to care for the environment and civilization, his talent is mostly in music and his ability to introduce a great amount of variety into his work. His millions of fans that span the world flock to him not only because of his great voice, but because they are drawn by his talent to weave beautiful lyrics that strike chords in people and fill them with awe.

“Desert Rose”, being one of the most popular songs written by Sting, furnishes an example of the contemplative versification that he presents in his music. In this song the desert rose symbolizes imperfect or not existing love. Whether this love is between a child and a mother, a woman and a man, or, two best friends, it does not exist to the author. Although he dreams and waits for love to come, he fails to ever see it or feel it. His disappointment is apparent in the first stanza when he states, “I dream of rain/I dream of gardens in the desert sand/ I wake in vain/ I dream of love as time runs through my hand”. It is as if a child is told to never touch a hot oven, but does so anyway just to see if it was really hot or not. It is after the child gets burnt that he/she realizes the oven was actually hot. Even though the author hopes for love to exist, it evidently remains a dream to him unless proven otherwise.

Because Sting is yearning for this love to exist, he is feeling tortured by the lack of it. Stated in the third stanza, “This desert rose/ Whose shadow bears the secret promise/ No sweet perfume that would torture you more than this”, shows the desperation the author is experiencing that to a feeling of solitude and perhaps even anger. It is the imagery of the shadow that shows that nothing is there pertaining to the secret promise which is love. Hence comes the agony that this particular love the author desires or love in general is non-existing.

Stated in the fourth stanza, “And now she turns/ This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams/ This fire burns/ I realized that nothings as it seems”, shows the paradox of love and what the author is going through emotionally. One must ask himself, is there ever logic behind dreams? Are logic and love ever interdependent? It is even within the song that the author dreams of rain, then fire, then rain again. He also woke in vain and felt tortured, yet continued to dream. This shows how the author’s, as well as all human beings, view on love changes several times throughout a lifetime. If love was logical and unquestioning, it wouldn’t be a mystery to the author himself. Although he feels that he will never find love, the author will continue to dream.

Perhaps true love is something a human can never experience, but can only get close to it. In the second stanza it states, “And near the flames/ The shadows play in the shape of a man’s desire”. Although the desire to know about love is there, it is the shadows of the flames that show the love doesn’t exist or the author is lacking the love he craves. It is the mystery of love that leaves the author dumbfounded. In conclusion, “The rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of love”.

If I may use a pun, the language, especially the adjectives, may be a bit too "flowery" at times. the content is good and reflects your own interpretation which is important as this is a very subjective piece.I would make one specific change if I were your editor. The passage "a global artist globally renowned" seems a bit stilted I would change it to "a globally, renowned solo artist". It conveys the same meaning but flows better. Good luck, passing grade.
