I've never had a garden before and don't really know anything about it. I need to know what sort of flowers do well in my climate, what plants do well without a lot of shade (I don't have much at my disposal) and what part of the season I should start in. We're done with frost now, so I assumed I should probably start asap.
Also, I need to know about rose bushes. My grandfather loved yellow roses and I'd like to plant a yellow rose bush in his memory. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated, too.
Thank you!
I'd like to start a garden in central Ky. Where do I start?
Here is the website that will answer all of your questions. It is part of the University of Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Program and everything you need is on this page. It will also tell you about growing roses but I am sending you a second site for additional info.

Reply:Visit a local nursery and tell them how much space you have, whether you want annuals/perenials, etc. Many flowers attract bees, others not as much, so it is helpful to have an idea of how you watn to use the garden (for looks, for kids to "help", etc). They love helping people get things started.
Reply:start working with you soil ...it is the first and most important part of a new garden....spring is the time to plant almost anything...plan what u want to plant and where...remember small to tall so u can see ever ything.....im no expert on roses however i am having good luck with a disease resistant variety and i do know u can cut them back in late March to eary April........good luck
Reply:I agree with JuJuBean, visit the local nursery to help you. I wish I could help you more I live in Texas and I know our temps and dirt are probably alot different than yours.
I can grow just about everything except roses. and I sure wish I could. I could kill one just bringing it home. I know they are pretty temperamental when it comes to what they are growing in. I'm sure the other posters have given you some great sites to help you with that.
Don't forget to plant things in pots. Any kind of pots do well with holes drilled in the bottom.
Coffee cans, 1 or 5 gallon buckets. Works great if you are limited on space. Tomatoes can be planted in the 5 gal as well as cucumbers. Just stick a stake in the center. Strawberries work well in the 1 gal size also
Some people swear by the "Old Farmers Almanac" too. Gives guides for planting and harvesting. Has been around for 125 yrs or so
Good luck with your garden
