I live in Southern California-Inland-and would love to plant roses. How and which kind?

I have NO gardening experience but when we bought our home there was a beautiful rose bush that has grown really well. I would love to plant more like but I don't know which kind of roses to choose and how to make sure they grow well. Do I buy a bush with roses already? How do I transplant them in my soil? How do I take care of them? Which types of roses smell great and flower well? I'm lost, please help!

The best time to buy and plant roses is in January and February. At that time you can buy "bare root" (not in a pot) plants, which are cheaper. Also, the choices are much greater. However, you could plant roses at this time if you wanted to.

In your location (I live in Northern California), you can plant just about ANY kind of rose that you would like. There are THOUSANDS of varieties of roses. You need to decide if you want a bush or a climbing rose. What color (s) do you want? That will help to narrow down your choices a bit. Then you can pick one with the scent you like (musky, citrus, sweet, etc.).

My recommendation would be to go to your local library and check out some books on roses (there will be tons!!). That way you can see good pictures of the flowers and read about the scents. ( Also, the books will tell you everything you need to know about planting and caring for your roses.) Then you could develop a list of ones you would like. You could buy them now, wait until next spring or put them on your Birthday and Christmas lists!!!

I add one or two rose bushes to my yard each year!!

Good Luck!!
