I was given a Rose plant, only stems one it and it shot out some new green stems. The the leaves started to wilt, I think I over watered it but I had it inside as I didn't want to put it in the garden until the frost passed. Then the leaves didn't seem to pick up so I cut back the stem but now that stem that;s left seems to be darkening off and can't see any new shutes.
I am a bit concerened as to what I can do next. This is a beloved present and very sentimental and I would be devastated to lose it. I think it's okay but I just need to know what to do. I have bought some rose food for when I plant it out in a container but am very unsure right now what to do. I may take it to a garden centre for advise but I wold be grateful for any help in the meantime.
Help with my Rose?
In my experience, this is pretty common with the little tea roses that are forced to bloom out of season. As long as you are careful with the watering (no greyish looking dirt on top is there? that's mold) and let it dry out well between watering and have it in a window where it can get at least several hours of sun a day it should perk back up.
You have no way of knowing what sort of stress it went thru before you got it. Cold trucks, many days in the dark, ect ect. The shock alone from going from a green house to your house and the trip it took is often more than enough to cause some die back.
Make sure you don't leave it in the decorative pot with no holes - if this is how you got it. You want it to be able to drain freely and not sit in water. When you do water use room temperature water %26amp; saturate then let it sit in an area where it can drain, maybe put some rocks under it to help this.
If it's starting to get fungusy looking while in the house, its getting too cold %26amp; too much moisture. Cut down on the watering, increase air flow (they like this) and try to put in a warmer area again where it can get as much sun as possible until you can plant the lil fellow.
Don't cut any more off unless you see mold on the leaves, the plant will retrieve nutrients %26amp; water from the leaves %26amp; tiny stems and when they are completely dead you can remove them gently with your fingers.
Reply:i am not up to date on roses, but this looks like a great web site that could answer your questions.

Reply:Most roses Ive had pull through a lot. Your thinking seems correct. Replant with rose food. It may need more sunlight also. for now. If know rose variety will help. Some need more water then others. Ones planted south are usually more draught resitant, then when rains will put lot shots on. I put in rose care on web and listed about 7th is homestead.com which has lot info and some on container roses. ALSO I got great books at library once. Its very interesting all the varietis. I also learned you can use banana peels cut up in dirt and deluted dish soap to wash bugs off leaves. good luck *mamatx
Reply:If the stems are turning black, it cannot be saved. Sorry.
Reply:I would just keep it moist not real wet and try to give it as much sun as possible and maybe give it some miracle grow for roses i hope this helps.
